If there’s anything we look forward to each summer—aside from the pretty bright dresses and bikinis, and the beach getaways we’ll wear them to—it’s the possibility of having a summer fling!
The idea of a fling may seem exciting and even romantic, but if you get into it with too much naiveté, you might end up in tears once the season comes to a close.
So if you ever decide to find yourself a summer fling, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Make sure it’s only a fling you’re after. Some girls say they are only out for a casual romp and yet end up falling in love with a guy who, sadly, really was only out for a casual romp. Especially for girls who are fresh out of a relationship and still emotionally vulnerable, there is that tendency to see the fling for more than what it really is—a meantime affair.
- Make yourself available, once you’re emotionally ready to jump into a summer romance. This shouldn’t be that hard, given all the beach trips and weekend parties you’re bound to attend over the summer. As this article in Dating.Suite101.com states, the best place to meet a potential summer partner is at a soiree thrown by a friend, where you're bound to be introduced to his or her single acquaintances. Just make sure you look smoking each time you go out. You never know who you’ll run into.
- Make sure the guy you’re interested in is not taken. According to EHow.com, you should check if he’s wearing a wedding ring or has a girlfriend lurking in the vicinity. The last thing you want is for his girl to chase you screaming across the street, when all you wanted was to have a little fun.
- Keep things light, once all is clear and it seems the two of you are on the same page. NYMag.com recommends keeping relationship stress to a minimum. It’s no good to get into all the trappings of a real relationship, like meeting the family and declaring love and devotion. It’s called a summer fling for a reason—it’s supposed to last only for as long as summer does.
- Know when to let go once summer draws to a close. That is, unless you’ve already fallen in love with the guy. In which case, you’ve got an entirely different problem on your hands.
Lucky for you if he sticks around after summer. The two of you probably have something much more than a summer fling. It’s up to you both how to make it go past the expiration date.
